Insurance, DVLA and sign-off

Tell the insurer what you built, get the paperwork straight, and know which jobs need a competent person before you sleep aboard.

Paperwork is part of the build

A beautiful van with the wrong insurance is a liability. Speak to insurers early, not the night before a trip. Tell them it is a campervan conversion, what fuel and electrical systems you fitted, and whether gas is aboard.

Keep receipts, certificates and photos of mounts, gas lockers and electrical distribution. Claims and future sales both go smoother with evidence.

DVLA and body type

Some conversions need the V5C updating to reflect a motor caravan. Rules and evidence lists change, so check the current DVLA guidance rather than a forum post from 2017. Side windows, living accommodation and cooking facilities often feature. Do it properly or not at all.

Sign-off jobs

Gas and complex electrical habitation work commonly need a competent person. Budget for inspections. They are cheaper than a refused claim or a dangerous fault.

MOT and weight

Remember axle limits and tyre load ratings. An overloaded van can fail more than pride. Weighbridge numbers belong with the paperwork pack.

If you cannot explain the van to an insurer in one calm paragraph, finish the notes before you finish the cladding.

Figures in this guide are planning estimates. Confirm weights and prices against real products, and have gas and electrical habitation work signed off by a qualified person.

Turn this into a build plan

Twelve questions about how you will actually use the van. Out comes a schedule, cost ledger and payload budget sized to your van.
