FAQ

Van conversion questions, answered plainly.

The stuff people search at midnight when the floor is out and the budget is creeping. No mystique, just practical UK advice.

How much does a van conversion cost in the UK?
Most self-builds land somewhere between £8,000 and £25,000 depending on the van, how much you do yourself, and whether you want winter living or weekend camping. Insulation, electrics and heating are the big swings. Conversion Bible gives you a planning range from your quiz answers, not a quote, so you can see where the money goes before you order.
How do I stay under GVW?
Weigh the empty van on a public weighbridge, then add every component with a known or estimated weight. Fixed bed, water, batteries and solar add up faster than people expect. The dashboard tracks planned weight against payload (GVW minus kerb) so you find out in the planner, not at a roadside check.
What order should I build a campervan in?
Strip and plan first, then holes in the shell (windows, fan, flares), then insulation and lining, then first-fix electrics and gas routes before you close the walls. Furniture, kitchen and finishing kit come last. The planner builds a week-by-week schedule in that order, paced to the hours you said you have.
Do I need a professional sign-off for gas or electrics?
For habitation gas and fixed 230V work, yes. Insurers and MOT testers increasingly expect evidence. DIY 12V is common, but fusing, cable sizing and ventilation still matter. Our guides flag sign-off jobs; the component library marks products that typically need a qualified person.
How long does a conversion take?
A focused DIYer at ten hours a week might finish in four to eight months. Evenings-only builds stretch to a year or more. The planner asks your pace up front and spreads jobs accordingly. You can tick tasks off in the dashboard as you go.
What is Conversion Bible?
A free planner and dashboard for UK van conversions. Answer twelve lifestyle questions, get a personalised build schedule with costs and weights, then track spend and payload until the van is finished. Guides and a component library sit alongside for the detail work.
